Our Block Paving Process
1. Free site visit and quote We measure up, check the ground and the access, and talk through blocks, colours and laying patterns. You get a written quote with the costs broken down.
2. Excavation We dig out to the depth the ground and the traffic actually need, not a standard depth applied to every job, and take the spoil away.
3. Sub-base Hardcore laid and compacted in layers over a weed membrane. This is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether the drive is still flat in ten years.
4. Edging and screed Edge restraints haunched in concrete, then a screeded sharp sand layer to lay onto. Without proper edging the whole drive creeps outwards over time.
5. Laying and finishing Blocks laid to the agreed pattern and cut in at the edges, then vibrated down with kiln dried sand brushed into the joints. Sealing is optional and we will tell you honestly whether yours needs it.
Do You Need Planning Permission?
For front gardens in England, paving over more than five square metres has needed planning permission since 2008 unless the surface is permeable, or unless the water drains onto a lawn or border rather than into the road.
In practice that means block paving is usually fine, either laid as a permeable system or with the falls set to run into a soakaway or planted area. We will tell you which applies to your drive at the quote stage rather than leaving you to find out later.
If you also need the kerb dropping to get a car on, that is a separate application to the council and we can talk you through it.
How long does a driveway take?
Most domestic drives are three to five days from digging out to finishing. Bigger jobs or ones needing drainage work take longer, and we will tell you which yours is before we start.
Can you lay over the existing driveway?
Almost never, and anyone who says yes is storing up a problem. The old surface comes up so the base can be built properly.
How much does block paving cost?
It depends on the area, the blocks you choose and what is currently there. We quote in writing after a site visit, and the quote is the price.
Will weeds grow through it?
A membrane and kiln dried sand keep it under control. Some seeding in the joints over time is normal and comes out with a stiff brush or a pressure wash.
