New Lawns and Re-Turfing
Old turf comes off rather than getting covered over. Then the ground is dug or rotavated, cleared of stones and roots, graded to a level, topsoil brought in where the existing ground is thin, and firmed and raked before a single roll goes down.
Turf is a living product with a short shelf life. It gets delivered on the morning it is being laid and goes down the same day, because rolls left stacked for 48 hours in warm weather start to yellow and die from the middle of the pallet outwards. If the weather turns and we cannot lay, we reschedule the delivery rather than laying dying turf.
Roll on turf Instant lawn, usable in about three weeks. The obvious choice for most gardens.
Seeded lawns Considerably cheaper on larger areas and often the better lawn long term, since the roots establish in place. It needs the right season and the patience to keep off it for a couple of months.
When to Lay It
Autumn is the best time to lay turf, roughly September to November. The ground is still warm, the rain does the watering for you, and the lawn has months to root before it gets any real use. Spring is the next best.
Mid summer is the hardest. Turf laid in July can work perfectly well, but it needs a great deal of water every single day for the first few weeks, and if a hosepipe ban lands halfway through you have a problem. We will lay in summer if that is when you need it, but we will tell you what you are taking on first.
Seeded lawns are narrower still. Early autumn or mid spring, when the soil is warm enough to germinate and wet enough to keep going.
Watering
Nearly every failed lawn we get called back to failed for one reason. It did not get enough water in the first fortnight.
New turf needs soaking daily for the first two to three weeks, and by soaking we mean enough that the water gets through the turf and into the soil beneath, not a quick pass with a hose that wets the grass and nothing else. Lift a corner after watering. If the underside is dry, keep going.
After that it can taper off, and by six weeks a healthy lawn is rooted in and looking after itself. Keep off it for the first three weeks, and take the first cut on the highest mower setting once it has knitted down and no longer lifts.
We leave written aftercare with every job. It is not a formality. If you are going away for a fortnight, tell us and we will move the date.
Common Questions
How long until I can use the lawn? About three weeks for natural turf, and keep pets and children off it in that time. Artificial grass is usable immediately.
Can you lay turf over my existing lawn? No. It has to come off. Laying over the old lawn traps a dead layer that stops the new roots getting down into the soil.
How much water does it need? A great deal, daily, for the first two to three weeks. This is the single biggest factor in whether it takes.
Will it survive a dog? Natural turf takes a while to toughen up and urine patches are hard to avoid entirely. If you have a large dog and a small garden, artificial is worth considering.
Do you supply the topsoil? Yes, where the existing ground needs it. Thin or stony soil gets topped up before laying, and that is included in the quote rather than added later.
How long does the job take? Most domestic lawns are one to two days including preparation. Artificial grass takes longer because of the sub-base.
