Our Fence Installation Process
1. Site visit We walk the boundary with you, check the ground and the access, and agree exactly where the fence line runs before anything is ordered.
2. Taking the old one out Old posts dug out including the concrete, panels and waste taken away. Leaving old concrete in the ground is why a replacement fence sometimes ends up an inch off line.
3. Posts in Holes dug to depth, posts set plumb and concreted, spacing checked along the whole run before anything else happens. A six foot fence wants around two feet of post in the ground.
4. Boards or panels Gravel boards first where they are being used, then panels or closeboard set to line and level, following the ground contour properly on a slope.
5. Finishing Post caps and capping rail on, gates hung and adjusted, waste removed and the ground raked over.
Why Fences Fail
Timber posts rot at the soil line, where wet ground and air meet. The top of the post can be perfectly sound while the bit you cannot see has gone completely, which is why a fence that looked fine in September is flat in November.
Two things change that. Concrete posts do not rot at all, and slotted ones let panels drop in and out without unscrewing anything, so replacing a damaged panel later is a two minute job. Concrete gravel boards keep timber up out of the wet ground, which adds years to the panels above them.
The other half is depth. A six foot fence wants roughly two feet of post in the ground, concreted, not a spike knocked in with a sledgehammer. Post spikes are quick and cheap and they are the reason so much fencing round here leans after one bad winter.
We will quote timber posts if that is what you want. We will also tell you what the concrete option costs, because the difference is usually smaller than people expect and the fence lasts twice as long.
Common Questions
How long does a fence take? Most domestic boundaries are one to two days. Longer if there is a lot of old concrete to dig out or the access is tight.
Can you repair rather than replace? Often, yes. If the panels are sound and only the posts have gone, replacing posts alone is much cheaper. We will tell you honestly which yours is.
Which side gets the good side? Convention is that the framework faces the owner and the smooth side faces out, so your neighbour gets the nicer view. It is convention, not a rule, and it is your call if it is your fence.
Do you take the old fence away? Yes, including the concrete out of the ground. It goes to a licensed transfer station.
Can you fence a sloping garden? Yes. It is either stepped, which follows the slope in level sections and leaves triangular gaps at the bottom, or raked, which follows the ground continuously. Raked costs more and looks better. We will show you both.
