The Bit Most People Skip
This is the single most important thing on this page.
Pressure washing block paving blasts the kiln dried sand out of the joints. That sand is not decorative. It is what locks the blocks together and stops them shifting under a car, and it is what keeps weed seed out of the gaps.
Wash a block drive and walk away, and within a few months the blocks start to move, the edges creep, and the weeds come back thicker than before because every joint is now an empty seed bed. It genuinely leaves the drive in worse condition than it was.
Every block paving job we do gets fully re-sanded afterwards as part of the price, not as an extra. If you are comparing quotes, ask whether re-sanding is included. If nobody has mentioned it, that is why one price is lower.
Pressure Is Not the Point
Turning it up is easy. Knowing when not to is the job.
Tarmac is the one that gets ruined most often. Too much pressure lifts the bitumen and strips the aggregate loose, leaving a rough patchy surface that cannot be undone.
Sandstone and limestone are soft and will pit and scar under a concentrated jet held too close.
Resin bound needs low pressure and a wide fan. High pressure pulls the stone out of the resin.
Timber furs up and stays furred. It goes along the grain, gently.
We also use a rotary flat surface cleaner rather than working across a drive with a lance. A lance leaves the striping you see on half the cleaned driveways round here, where each pass overlaps unevenly. A rotary head gives a consistent finish across the whole surface.
Common Questions
How long does a driveway take? Most domestic drives are half a day to a day, depending on size and how bad the growth is.
Do you need to use my water and power? Usually yes for water, though we can bring our own where there is no outside tap. Tell us when you book.
Will it damage my paving? Not at the correct pressure. Damage comes from using drive settings on soft stone or timber, which is what we are careful to avoid.
How often should it be done? Most driveways benefit every two to three years. Shaded patios and north facing paths go green faster. A biocide treatment stretches the interval.
Will the weeds come back? Not as quickly if the joints are re-sanded properly. Weeds thrive in empty joints, which is exactly what a wash without re-sanding leaves behind.
Can you get oil stains out? Often, though it depends how long they have been there and how porous the surface is. Old oil that has soaked deep into concrete may lighten rather than vanish. We will tell you honestly what to expect before we start.
