Our Garden Restoration Process
1. Site visit We come and look, which on a badly overgrown garden is the only way to price it. What is hiding under the growth changes the job completely, and anyone quoting from photos alone is guessing.
2. Clearance Vegetation, waste and unwanted structures out and away to a licensed transfer station. This is usually the bulk of the cost, because it is the bulk of the lorry loads.
3. What we find Once it is bare we walk it with you again. Old foundations, drainage problems, a patio nobody knew was there. This is the point to agree what happens next, before any money goes on the rebuild.
4. Groundworks Levels, drainage, bases and structures. The unglamorous half, and the half that decides whether the garden still works in five years.
5. Final finish Surfaces, planting, turf and edging. Site swept and everything taken away.
Waste Removal and Your Legal Duty
Clearance jobs produce a lot of waste, and this is worth understanding before you let anyone take it off your property.
Anyone removing waste from your home must be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency. More importantly, as the householder you have a legal duty of care over your own waste. If someone takes it away cheaply and fly tips it down a country lane, and it is traced back to you, you can be fined. “I paid a bloke to take it” is not a defence.
We are a registered waste carrier and everything goes to a licensed transfer station. Ask us for the registration number and the waste transfer notes any time, and ask anyone else quoting for the same.
Two Things We Look For First: Knotweed and Nesting Birds
Japanese knotweed. Neglected gardens are exactly where it turns up. You are not legally required to remove it from your own land, but you can be prosecuted for allowing it to spread onto neighbouring property, and its presence affects mortgage lending and sale prices. It also cannot be dealt with by ordinary clearance, since fragments of root regrow and the waste is controlled. If we find it, we will tell you straight away and put you in touch with a specialist rather than digging it up and spreading it around your garden.
Nesting birds. Wild birds, their nests and their eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Between roughly March and August, dense hedging and overgrown shrubs in a neglected garden are very likely to hold active nests, and clearing them while they are in use is an offence.
We check before we cut. Occasionally that means leaving one section of hedge until the young have fledged and coming back for it. Nobody enjoys the delay, but the alternative is breaking the law with a hedge trimmer.
Common Questions
How much does clearing an overgrown garden cost? It depends almost entirely on volume and access. A garden that needs eight lorry loads out through a house costs far more than one with side access and two. This is why we visit rather than quoting over the phone.
How long does it take? Clearance is usually one to three days. The rebuild afterwards depends on what you want, from a few days for turf and a tidy to several weeks for a full redesign.
Can you just do the clearance? Yes. Plenty of people want the garden emptied and then decide what to do with it. There is no obligation to have us do the rest.
Will you take away an old shed or greenhouse? Yes, including the base. Flag it when you ring, as asbestos cement sheeting on older sheds needs separate handling and we will need to know in advance.
Do I need to be there? No. We regularly work on empty and probate properties and can deal with agents or executors directly.
